Classified as a very severe cyclonic storm, Biparjoy is expected to land around Thursday evening between Mandvi in India's Gujarat province and Karachi in southern Pakistan.
Tropical Cyclone "BIPARJOY" has weakened into a "Very Severe Cyclonic Storm" (VSCS) - Category 3, with sustained windspeeds of approximately 150-160 km/h and gusts up to 180 km/h. Its current location is near Latitude 21.2° N and Longitude 66.6° E, roughly 410 km south of Karachi and 400 km south of Thatta.
According to the latest forecast by NDMA, the tropical cyclone Biparjoy is expected to maintain a northward trajectory until the morning of June 14, 2023 and then it is likely to recurve eastward and will make a landfall between Keti Bandar (Southeast Sindh Coastline) and the Indian Gujarat Coastline in the afternoon of June 15, 2023, as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS). The areas likely to be affected include Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Tharparkar, Karachi, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Hyderabad, Ormara, Tando Allah Yar Khan and Tando Mohammad Khan. These findings have been developed by NEOC Technical team using international and national models (PMD-NWPM, NASA, PDC & UKM, IMD, BOM-A, and ECMWF).
Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said that more than 20,500 people have been evacuated from coastal districts and the evacuation was expected to be completed by Tuesday evening.
In Pakistan, paramilitary troops and local civil authorities also started moving people to shelters and relief camps, which were set up in schools and other government buildings, said Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman.
