CCPR report by Pakistan: Human Rights and Minority issues are raised at Geneva

International Covenant on Civil &n Political Rights meeting held by UN in Geneva (UNOG)

Pakistan presented it's 2nd periodic report at (CCPR) Civil & Political Human Rights. The committee was held at UN , Geneva office (UNOG) at 17-18 Oct 2024.

The Human Rights Committee is the body of 18 independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by its State parties. All States parties are obliged to submit regular reports to the Committee on how civil and political rights are being implemented.

Committee Chaired by ABDO ROCHOLL , MS. Tania Maria was Vice Chairperson. Article 41 of CCPR gives rights and procedure to complaint violation against human rights.

It continues to strive to ensure all the civil and political rights guaranteed by the Covenant can be enjoyed in full and without discrimination, by all people.

Representatives from Pakistan were asked several questions regarding Human Rights and Political issues in Country. For they presented report, in which law and policy matters were described.

Human Rights violation against women, children and minorities were significant concern. Slavery, force labour, Child labor, child marriages, sexual exploitation and minority issues i.e. force conversion, force marriages and condition of shelter homes were prime complaints made by members of the body.

A very recent case of Lahore collage was raised on plate form.

Measurement and legislation regarding child marriages are different in all provenances. Although Sindh government has edge in Dua Zahra case. explained by representatives in answer of child marriage act and legislation.

Minorities are given freedom of practice of their religion according to Pakistan law briefed to meeting body. Further safety and protection measurements are made to ensure minority safety. Hate speech is being removed from school syllabus, social media. Religious harmony committees are conducted. In Punjab Ahmadi community is dealt to resolve issues, said by representatives.

Misuse of blasphemy law was highlighted, in answer representatives of Pakistan gave a detail policy measurements for safeguard of citizens.

Freedom of expression is given keeping by respecting others. Social media is available, TV channels and big number of newspaper and radios are working in Pakistan that shows country is given freedom of expression.

Although one of the member complained, Pakistan gave outlines of lots of legislation, acts and measurements but on ground reality is not good. In Answer, they were briefed the efforts of government and resilience by public in general. Also the climate crisis caused hindrances to reach the goals.

At the end positive point is that efforts are in progress. As in order to combat with terrorism, we have given sacrifices for that Pakistan should be acknowledged.
